United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) mission stands to provide and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, and enabling nations and people to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.
Wild Navigator was approached by UNEP Africa team to showcase their Tunza International Children’s Painting Competition. TUNZA is a word in Kiswahili (the common language of most East African countries) that means to “treat with care”. They host the 22nd International Children’s Painting Competition. The programme is based on a strategy that aims to provide young people with information and tools on how to “treat Mother Earth with care” and how to Act for a better world.
The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organized every year by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation.
It has been held since 1991 and has received more than 3 million entries from children in over 150 countries.

Theme - Water: Where does it come from ?
Sub theme - Source of life
Everything that you can define as life happens because of the actions of protein in water. Because without any water; plants, animals and humans will die. Water supports the plants grow so that we could breathe in oxygen and eat food. Water supports animals to survive. Without water, there will be no life on earth.
The planet’s oceans, rivers, lakes and other bodies of water provide homes to countless species of plants and animals. Water supports life in many other ways as well. We use water every day in farming and agriculture, manufacturing, transportation and also power generation. In addition, water plays an important role in regulating the earth’s temperature for human survival.
Water is the source of all life on earth. We all share the responsibility to ensure a healthy, secure and sustainable water supply for our communities, environment, and economy – our quality of life depends on it.
Despite the fact that water covers 71% of earth surface, very little of it is used by human beings. Water pollution affects drinking water, rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world. This consequently harms human and all other living things on earth.
The theme of the 22nd painting competition is: Water: Where Does It Come From; Sub-theme: Source of Life.
Children will have until 15 February 2013 to submit their entries.
The organizers are inviting children all over the world to submit their paintings to the UNEP office in their regions.
Addresses of these offices are indicated on this post.
Entry Rules and Conditions:
Children between the age of 6 and 14 years.
- Paintings must be done on A4 OR A3 papers.
- Full name, age (day, month, and year), gender and full address including phone and e-mail (in English) must be on the back of the painting.
- Style of painting is free: crayons, coloured pencils, watercolours, etc.
- Paintings that have been shown or accepted elsewhere will not be accepted in this competition.
- Paintings that show a particular person, an organization or a brand name will not be accepted.
- Do not include any words or descriptions in the paintings. After being declared a winner, one is expected to give a write up of his/her painting, including the following:
- What inspired you?
- What message you would like to express through your painting to other children around the world?
- How you have been involved in activities aimed at protecting the environment?
- What you would like to become later on in life.
- Only hard copies of paintings will be accepted.
- You can submit more than one entry.
Deadline
Entries must reach the relevant UNEP regional office by 15 February 2013.
Entries received after this date will not be included in the competition.

The 1st Prize:
One entrant - US$ 2,000 with a fully paid trip for the winner and a chaperone to the next Tunza Event (date and venue to be confirmed later). The winner will also receive a plaque and supplementary prizes.
The 2nd Prize:
One entrant - US$ 1,000 and a fully paid trip for the winner and chaperone to the next Tunza Event (date and venue to be confirmed later). The winner will also receive a plaque and supplementary prizes.
The 3rd Prize:
Three entrants a diploma for each winner (No cash)
The 4th Prize:
Ten entrants a diploma for each winner (No cash)
The 5th Prize:
Thirty five entrants a diploma for each winner (No cash)
Regional winners:
One winner only from each region: Africa; Asia and the Pacific; West Asia; Europe; Latin America and the Caribbean; and North America. US$ 1,000 and fully paid trip for each winner and chaperones to the next Tunza Event (venue and date to be confirmed later).
(Note that by entering the Competition, you have assigned copyright of your painting(s) to the organizers. The painting(s) will not be returned and will be used to raise environmental awareness through exhibition, websites, posters, publications etc) and to raise funds to further promote environmental activities by children.
Selection of winners:
Winners will be selected through a fair and impartial selection by the organizers.
Announcement of winners:
- Regional winners will be announced on 22 April, 2013.
- Global winners will be announced on 5 June 2013 (which is also World Environment Day).
